An inmate of a UK prison has leaked pictures of his meals to the public and claimed that he would “rather starve” than eat what they cook in jail.

According to the anonymous inmate who sent the images of his food to a local newspaper, the meals they get at the prison are “worse than dog food.”

As seen on the pictures, the meals consist of foods such as French fries, fish, pasta, pizza, beans, meat patties, and so on.

All of the pictures were taken and shared via a smuggled-in phone as possession of mobile devices is not allowed in the prison.

After the photos went viral and were sent to the Ministry of Justice, the authorities responded and claimed that all meals in the prisons across the UK meet “nutritional guidelines.”

“All prisoners are offered fruit and vegetables as part of three healthy meals a day, which meet nutritional guidelines set out by the Food Standards Agency and the Department of Health,” a spokesperson told the newspaper.

“We are investigating these pictures and any prisoner found using a mobile can face extra time behind bars.”

The photos came to the light amid the revelation that Wrexham’s HMP Berwyn inmates might be getting keys to their own jail cells in an attempt to provide them with enough privacy needed to rehabilitate successfully.

“Being given the possibility to personalize their own environments has a wide range of benefits for the health and well-being of people in custody, helping to create a sense of place and identity,” a report by the Ministry of Justice and the Royal Institute of British Architects reads.

“Allowing men in custody to control atmospheric conditions like opening windows or ventilators, controlling heating… can alleviate negative well-being impacts of poor atmospheric conditions and generate a sense of self-efficacy.”
