A confrontation at Tuesday night’s Fashion Show mall erupted into gunshots that left two people with injuries not deemed life-threatening in what was identified as an isolated instance by Metro police.
Though increased Metro units stampeded the mall around 6:15 p.m. after gunfire was reported, they were not dealing with an active shooter, Capt. Dori Koren said.
A preliminary report suggests that one gunman may have been thought to have fled the scene before officers arrived, Koren said, adding there was no further danger to the store.
Although no arrests had been announced, additional suspects could be involved. Koren said police were attempting to determine what role, if any, the victims of the shooting ended up playing in the fight.
In the midst of the chaos, police barricaded the mall down and thoroughly searched it to ensure there were no suspects in the “immediate vicinity,” Koren said.
This was not the first time gunshots went off at the store, located at 3200 Las Vegas Boulevard South in the tourist corridor.
A gunman who was in a fight with two people pulled out a gun last Memorial Day shot it in the air and fired a round through the building, triggering what Metro characterized as “mass hysteria” at the time.
Investigators later caught up to a 24-year-old Detroit resident, who had fled in a cab, and booked him on multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
In 2014, a man was shot in the neck during a physical altercation between two groups near the grocery court.
The man did not cooperate with investigators at the time, he further refused to recognize himself, he was so out of mind after that confrontation that he could not recall the ones who shot him and what was their purpose behind it.
He also did not remember how he was able to reach the hospital.
After the incident, A Metro spokesperson said that “They’ve got young teenagers that are militarized, dangerous and one says something to another, and we don’t know what that is, but they’re going from zero to a high order of coercion and start shooting,”. Their purpose behind the shooting is still not known.
