Teenage siblings are believed to have become the first identical twins ever to undergo gender reassignment surgery together.
19-year-old Mayla Phoebe de Rezende and Sofia Albuquerck from Brazil are young ladies who long dreamed of undergoing sex-change surgery.
While the sisters were born as males, they have allegedly long knew they were females as they felt disassociated with their birth gender.
Throughout the years, Mayla and Sofia remained close and did everything together. Eventually, they also decided to undergo gender reassignment procedure side-by-side since they both knew they wanted to get rid of their genitalia for a complete transition.
After their plea, the girls’ grandfather decided to auction off one of his properties and pay for the $20k surgery bill to make his grandchildren’s dreams come true.
According to the reports, the teens underwent the procedure on February 13 and 14, just one day apart, whereas the five-hour surgery was led by Dr Jose Carlos Martins. As the doctor insisted, “this is the only reported case in the world” of identical twins undergoing gender reassignment surgery together.
“Before being sedated in hospital, I still couldn’t believe my dream was being fulfilled.
When I woke up, I couldn’t believe it.It’s something that’s still sinking in. I no longer feel that discomfort when lying or sitting down. It’s a wonderful thing,” Mayla expressed. “My first shower after being discharged was magical.
Meanwhile, her sister, Sofia, admitted that living in what she calls “the most transphobic country in the world” hasn’t been easy.
As Mayla added, their parents “weren’t afraid of what we were” but they did fear that the girls would get bullied and mistreated for being themselves.
“Whenever someone did something to us in the street, the first thing we wanted to do was go home and tell our mom, for her to give us a hug. She was like a lioness. She always protected us fiercely,” the 19-year-old added.
“My goal now is to graduate in medicine and buy another house for my grandparents as a way of repaying their gesture.”
