Whenever someone mentions an iceberg, most people will immediately think of the Titanic.
It’s truly awe-inspiring when you realize that even a big ship is no match for the immovable majesty that is an iceberg.
Yet while this is true, people also forget that at its most basic, an iceberg is still frozen water akin to the ice cubes in your freezer. Yes, the scale is different but it’s also susceptible to the same forces that can affect any ice formation. This means that exposed to enough heat and pressure, an iceberg will melt and break down.

Again, the scale and scope of the forces that can affect an iceberg are mind-boggling but the principles are just the same. But since we’re talking about something on such a colossal scale, watching that process happen is an impressive sight.

Everything was quiet and peaceful when suddenly, the iceberg started breaking apart.point 73 | Nicola was able to whip out her phone soon after the event started and captured stunning footage of the majestic iceberg breaking apart.point 187 | 1
There was a bit of a scare when big chunks of ice tumbled into the water. When you drop ice cubes into a glass of water, it sends ripples and waves all around the container. But these ice chunks likely weigh hundreds if not thousands of pounds and the resulting wave could easily capsize a boat.
Fortunately, the waves aren’t really that big and the chaos in their boat subsides but the quiet is soon broken by the iceberg finally tearing apart until it becomes nothing more than a floating piece of turquoise ice.
Nicola said: “Firstly I couldn’t believe I had my phone on video at the exact moment it happened, it was without a doubt one of the most incredible things I have ever seen.
“I think initially everyone was on a high.
“However, once we had a moment to comprehend the size of it and saw the wave coming there was certainly a degree of panic.
“As we all rushed to get in up some steps, rather than be on the steps as the wave hit me and a couple of others got down low to the side of the ship and held on, fortunately, the wave subsided.
“The sound for me it was the thunderous sound that I remember most, especially in contrast to the total tranquility before and after.
“In the end, there was a stunning piece of ice with a beautiful turquoise stripe through it and a lot of debris.”
