A loving husband has built a special ‘bike chair’ so that he and his wife with Alzheimer’s could go out for rides together as they used to in the past.
Bill and Glad Forward are an inspirational couple who’ve been facing the challenges of life together for more than 50 years.
While the woman’s health began to deteriorate back in 2004 and led the doctors to diagnose her with Alzheimer’s, her husband remained determined to find a way for the couple to continue their favorite hobby – biking.
Since Glad was unable to ride a bike on her own, Bill designed a special ‘bike chair’ which is essentially a merger between a regular bike and a wheelchair.
The specially-designed bike chair has one wheel, a seat, and pedals at the back whereas the front is composed of two wheels, a leg rest, and a chair above.
“When we first started dating, I used to ride my bike from where I lived to where she was, and that was about 5 kilometers, on a Saturday afternoon, because that was the only chance we had to get together,” Bill expressed in a CVCNow video.
“I used to ride everywhere on my bike, and Glad had her bike as well, and we’d put a bay chair on the front of her bike, so we carried our babies around on the bikes. Bike’s been part of our lives, and I guess that has something to do with this now,” he added.
Nowadays, despite the struggles that come along with Glad’s diagnosis, the couple enjoys bike rides in their neighborhood.
In addition, Bill’s determination inspired the formation of The Bike Chair team who are working on developing a universal version of the bike chair that could serve people with mobility problems around the world.
