‘Hungry’ Puppy Who Eats Everything In His Way Was Fitted A Muzzle Only To Eat It Too

Owners of a ‘hungry’ puppy who eats everything in his way have fitted him with a muzzle only for the pooch to eat that too.

As Teri and Andrew Gumpert claimed, their 18-month-old doggie Dexter eats everything he finds including their clothes.

After the spaniel devoured several objects that could cost him his life, the couple decided to get him a muzzle only for their plan to backfire as the dog chewed through it and ate the guard.

“It all started with him eating his way through the contents of one of my daughter’s clothes drawers about a year ago and it’s continued ever since,” Andrew explained.

“We got him a muzzle but it appears Uncle Casper – our older spaniel – helped him to loosen it to the point where Dexter could get his teeth into it and proceeded to eat it.

“We hope it’s just a playful puppy thing and he’ll eventually grow out of it as at the moment we can’t take our eyes off him for a minute. He’s a beautiful, loving dog but he is also very mischievous.”

Previously, Dexter had four surgeries to remove foreign objects from his stomach.

“On four occasions, Dexter required an exploratory celiotomy, which is when a large incision is made down the tummy to identify all the organs within the body,” veterinarian Sebastian Griffin said.

“Once the foreign bodies are located the intestines are incised, the foreign body removed and then the intestines are stitched back together.”

As he added, the foreign objects included duct tape, a tennis ball, a plastic bag, fishnet tights, and wood chippings. On one occasion, Dexter also swallowed chocolates that could have easily ended his life if not detected in time.

“All other organs are then checked before closing and putting stitches in. On other occasions, such as when he ate 12 chocolates, which could easily have proved fatal, the best way of dealing with Dexter was to make him sick,” the vet added.

While Mr. Griffin confirmed that puppies often devour things they shouldn’t, he acknowledged that Dexter’s disorder is “certainly unusual.”

“To do four exploratory surgeries on one dog is certainly unusual. His owners fitted him with a muzzle to stop him eating things but unfortunately he ate that too,” he said.
