In a world where news travels fast, reputations travel even faster.

This is especially true when it comes to dining experiences.

Many people refuse to try a new place if it has a bad rating online. Who could blame them? One one of the benefits of living in the modern age is that we can heed the warning of others and avoid a bad experience.

One restaurant in Alberta, Canada discovered the power of online reviews in a shocking way. Colin Ross was suffering from a nasty hangover when he went out in search of a greasy meal. He stumbled upon Whitbie’s Fish & Chips and decided to give it a try.

Inside, Ross found the restaurant totally empty except for 69-year-old owner John McMillan. Despite the grim scene, Ross was pleasantly surprised with an outstanding meal.

He struck up a conversation with the owner who admitted that they were struggling. Ross said the food was great and even offered to help with marketing the place, but McMillan declined his offer.

Ross decided he at least had to tell his 2,000 Facebook friends about his new favorite place to grab a bite.
