The Chicago City Council has taken a decision on the basis of votes and has banned the horse-drawn carriages industry from the city right at the start of the year on Friday.
The take on the same was taken after Downtown Ald. Brendan Reilly decided to take votes.
Reilly said “I have been working on the matter for as long as a decade now. I have been trying to make the carriage operators and owners of the horses to treat them in a better and more humane way. But this does not seem to be happening. Every year we are getting more and more violation complaints of the horses.
Following the same, Reilly said he had no other option left then banning the industry altogether.
Reilly said that among the voters there are people who are concerned with the safety of humans and traffic issues that are arising due to the usage of carriages on road.
Others had a concern for the animals that are being treated in the most inhumane way after giving out their best labor. For Reilly, the concern is a mix of both the reasons.
He said that he has grown up on a farm and he knows that the horses are bred to work and they are prepared for it.
But these animals are not bred to consume fumes coming out of the back of a bus running on the concrete roads.
He said that the treatment is not even close to the humane treatments these animals deserve.
He even said that in other cities they have seen people and horses dying because they got mingled up with the traffic. He said these animals are not born to run in the middle of cars and traffic but to run on their own land.
Last month a video of a 12 years old horse went viral who was later named Aisha. The poor horse had collapsed multiple times during its run on the road. Later it was euthanized. The video and the practice had received tons of criticism following it.
