The Les Vegas authorities have been called barbaric after it made homeless individuals sleep on the floor in the carpark while casinos and hotels are unoccupied and empty.
Las Vegas, Nevada has painted the social distancing barriers in the carpark on which the rough sleepers have to sleep after the main shelter in that area was closed.
This happened because, at Catholic Charities’ shelter, a man was tested positive for the coronavirus disease.
The shelter had around five hundred homeless people who were left with no place to go when this shelter was shut down and Courtyard Homeless Resource Center, the other shelter, was full.
Initially, the carpark was laid 24,000 sq. ft. of carpet to be used as sleeping mats. However, it was removed soon, which meant 117 individuals had to sleep on the concrete floor only that had painted lines to make sure the people stayed 6 flex away from each other.
The decision to remove the carpet was taken because it was really hard to disinfect it.
Las Vegas’ communications director, David Riggleman said that they found cleaning and disinfecting carpet very difficult.
He added that they had demanded sleeping mats that they used at the Courtyard because they could be disinfected easily. However, there were no mats available.
The pictures were uploaded on social media and this move was termed sickening. A Twitter user said that the country is in a failed state and pictures like these would be in history books to show what U.S. collapse appeared to be.
He added that this would serve as proof about how people were ignored in such a time. Another one commented that pictures like these would be in the late capitalism chapters of history books.
