Stay-At-Home Mum Criticized After Asking Her Husband For $3,500 Monthly Salary

A stay-at-home mum has been criticized on social media after proposing to request her husband to pay her $3,500 per month as salary for watching over their kids while he is at work.

Speaking of her idea on Reddit, the mother revealed she wants the salary not only to buy childcare essentials and household items but also to have enough “pocket money for fun things.”

Soon after sharing her demands, Reddit users slammed the mum and suggested she was selfish and manipulative for requesting such a large ‘salary.’

“This lady is delusional, I bet she’d never take her husband’s spot to work and have him take care of the kids. She’s a mother now and wants to still live like how she did before – not possible,” one upset commenter wrote.

Following a massive backlash, the mother defended her words by saying she and her husband agreed for her to stay at home but failed to discuss financial matters in advance, leaving her dependent and “humiliated.”

“My husband earns good money but he’s very frugal about nonessential spending because he wants to be financially independent (no job, earnings from investments) at an early age,” the woman shared.

“Granted he was like this when I met him but I had also had my own salary at the time to do what I wanted.”

Speaking of how her spending changed after the birth of their 18-month-old child, the mum added:

“Well, now that I stay at home we have mini fights every time I want to buy anything over $150 (which is the limit he set that needs a ‘conversation’).

“This means if I go out to get clothing, makeup, brunch, little treats, etc. and the amount exceeds $150, I would need to call him beforehand and talk about what I’m buying.”

After she learned that her sister had a financial agreement with her partner, the mother in question came upon the idea to ask for a salary as well.

As she went on to explain, the $3,500 salary would mean that she could spend nearly $1,000 per month on herself and buy expensive designer shoes without the need to contact her husband in advance.

“Would I be the a******e to suggest a similar arrangement with my husband so I don’t need to go groveling for money every time I want to buy myself something nonessential?” she added.

The mother’s plea for understanding, however, didn’t go through as planned.

Reddit users soon rallied to criticize the mother for wanting to get paid to look after her own children and for desiring the same lifestyle she had before becoming a mother.

“Sounds like you’re a bored stay at home mother that wants to spend money on yourself because you can. Do you spend $900 a month on yourself? That’s a lot of freaking money and sounds like he has you on a leash for a reason because you’d spend every cent you could,” one person wrote.

“Maybe it’s because I’m in a different financial environment entirely but having to discuss spending more than 150 dollars (£120) is entirely fair. That’s a distinct sum of money and things worth more than that falls within the reasonable need to talk about,” another one suggested.

One person wrote: “You want to live the life of a rich independent woman (350 for shoes!!!!) But you don’t work and are a mom. Act like one.”
