Golden Age Hollywood Legend Olivia de Havilland Turned 104


Olivia de Havilland, the ‘Gone With the Wind’ British-American actress who has been named a Dame, has turned 104.

The Dame, who played in film hits such as ‘The Adventures of Robin Hood’ and ‘The Snake Pit’, is now considered one of the last living legends from Hollywood’s golden age.

The Classical Hollywood actress was born in Tokyo, Japan, and later raised in the UK. After moving in Hollywood with her mother, Olivia quickly rose to fame with her career spanning over five decades from 1935 to 1988.

Throughout the years, the Dame, who was often dubbed one of the leading actresses of her time, played in 49 feature films.

Some of her best movie appearances included The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), Gone With the Wind (1939), Hold Back the Dawn (1941), To Each His Own (1946), The Snake Pit (1948), and The Heiress (1949).

In the 1950s, Olivia, who now lives in Paris, France, also took to the stage of Broadway theater where she participated in the likes of Romeo and Juliet (1951) and Candida (1952).

In 2017, following nearly 30 years after her official retirement, Olivia also became the oldest person to be honored with the title of a Dame.

“[I am] extremely proud that the Queen has appointed me a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire,” she said in an interview with PEOPLE at the time.

Previously, the iconic actress also opened up about her health and told Vanity Fair that she “would prefer to live forever in perfect health.”

“I would prefer to live forever in perfect health, but if I must at some time leave this life, I would like to do so ensconced on a chaise lounge, perfumed, wearing a velvet robe and pearl earrings, with a flute of champagne beside me and having just discovered the answer to the last problem in a British cryptic crossword,” Olivia said in a 2005 interview with Vanity Fair.

While 15 years may have passed since then, the Dame remains one of the last surviving legends from Hollywood’s Golden Age.
