Hollywood Icon Peter Fonda Dies At 79 After Battling With Lung Cancer


Seventy-nine-year-old Peter Fonda dies after experiencing respiratory failure from lung cancer.

The actor is best known for his part in 1969 film Easy Rider breathed his last on Friday morning at his home in California.

His family, referring to the iconic movie that he starred in and co-wrote, asked the people to ‘raise a glass of freedom’.

Peter is survived by Margaret DeVogelere, his wife, and was the son of Henry Fonda. His actress sister, Jane Fonda said that she is very sad and called him her sweet-hearted baby-brother.

She further called him the talker of the family and recalled the beautiful alone time she had spent in his last days. She revealed that he went out laughing.

His family put a statement reading that they are sharing the news of Peter’s peaceful death with deep sorrow. The family revealed the time and the reason for his death as well.

Peter was planning to recognize the fiftieth anniversary of the classic film by organizing a concert and screening of the movie on 20 September.

Steppenwolf’s Roger McGuinn, John Kay, and other musicians were supposed to perform as per the music direction of T-Bone Burnett.

Easy Rider also starred Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson and bagged Peter an Oscar nomination for the writing of the culture classic.

Peter collaborated with Dennis on a script regarding two weed-smoking bikers on a trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras through the Southwest.

On their journey, they befriend a drunken lawyer but elevate the anger of Southern rednecks and are killed before they can return home.

The film was directed only for $380,000 but earned a massive $40 million worldwide, which was a gigantic sum at that time.  It has been ranked amongst the top 100 American films.

In 1998, Easy Rider was added in the U.S. National Film Registry for being historically, culturally, and aesthetically significant.
