Holidaymakers could be drinking beach cocktails containing human waste and could potentially kill, according to The Sun.
Tourist spots in Spain like Barcelona and Benidorm are reportedly crammed with illegal vendors who sell drinks made from booze stored in drains while fruits were washed in public toilets.
Sellers allegedly flog trayful of beverages like Pina Colada and Sex on the Beach to holidaymakers, telling them they are from bars nearby.
Some vendors even wear uniforms to give the impression their illegal service is legit.
The Spanish authorities started a clampdown on the areas last year. However, they returned in force again, holidaymakers have reported.
Vendors have been seen wearing matching smart blue polo shirts to make themselves look official.
One tourist took a photo of a seller plying his trade in the Beniform resort and posted it on Facebook. “I see the dodgy cocktail sellers are about today. Yuk I think I will give it a miss. here were 2 sellers out today with blue shirts. They look so official but yuk. Keep away everyone.”
Another wrote: “I saw this out side my other halfs bar, he was chopping the fruit up on the bin lid, and lifting bottles of spirits up out of the drains.”
Police in holiday resorts across the country started to target the illegal vendors last year after discovering that they keep their ingredients in dirty drains. Videos have been released showing officers lifting manhole covers to reveal straws, glasses, ice, towels and bottles kept underground in filthy conditions.
Three men were arrested for selling the bacteria-laden beverages.
Spanish newspaper El Mundo said that scientists found some of the drinks have traces of human poo and E-coli bacteria which could cause life-threatening diseases and even death.
Travel writer Lauren Bate also warned tourists about the illegal trade. She wrote: “They have been known to wash fruit where you wash your feet on the beach, yes really. Using toilet water as a substitute for water.
“They’ve even been known to chop up the ingredients on cardboard boxes, once lived in by stray cats. Yum.
“They fill their cocktails with fruit that has gone moldy out in the sun. Use old, dirty cutlery. Plus, you guessed it, they don’t wash their hands.”
