One person died and a police officer was rushed to a hospital after being shot at least one time at a Knoxville high school in Tennessee.
The Monday shooting occurred at Austin-East Magnet High School at around 3 pm. Officials said that a male suspect has been detained.
According to Knox News, a male teen was shot dead.
“A KPD officer was shot at least one time and transported to the UT Medical Center with injuries that are not expected to be life-threatening,” police said in a statement.
“One male was pronounced dead at the scene, while another was detained for further investigation. There are no other known gunshot victims at this time.”
Multiple agencies, including Firearms and Explosives and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco rushed to the scene after the Knoxville Police Department shared the incident on Twitter.
Police said they had received reports of a “make subject who was possibly armed at the school,” adding: “Upon approach of the subject, shots were fired.”
The spokesperson for Knox County Schools, Carly Harrington, said the school was placed on lockdown after the incident but the area is now labeled as secure.
A source told Knox News that the situation was no longer ‘active’ as of Monday evening.
The cop who was injured was an Austin-East school resource officer.
KCS Superintendent Bob Thomas said: “The school building has been secured and students who were not involved in the incident have been released to their families.”
No information has been released on the person who died, or the suspected shooter. It is unclear if the person shot was the gunman or a student.
