Maria Spolin runs the Church Farm at West Bridgford Nottingham.
She became life support and fighting disease specialist at the age of 20 at Glenfield Hospital.
When five of her residents were tested positive in March, Maria took the situation into her hands. She started to use zoning practice where diseased people are put to immediate isolation.
Maria changed the communal area of the Church Farm into a makeshift medical ward where the residents with the symptoms were kept.
All the patients were given care for the entire month. Maria added that it was a difficult situation and calculating the consequences, everyone’s life was at stake.
She said that everyone had to act quickly because it was important to limit the spread of coronavirus that can possibly harm the lives of the residents.
Maria knew the health risk she was exposed to, but at that moment, ensuring the health and safety of the residents is what she cared about.
Peter Stevenson, one of the residents, said that the residents are blessed to have her, and he is thankful to the team with whom they have been able to contain the spread.
The manager of the home said that the risk of virus spread increases in areas like a care home, and they were highly worried about the consequences.
Helen, the manager, said that the team discussed with Maria regarding what needs to be done. According to Maria’s instruction, the staff was caring for the people round the clock and were maintaining proper isolation.
The staff worked really hard and took up the job risking their own health. They were changing clothes and bedding to maintain proper hygiene among the residents.
It was all due to Maria’s spontaneous reaction that helped in containing the spread. Her training in life support and knowledge about swine flu care was proven to be helpful for the residents and the care home.
