A hero teenager has put his life on the line to protect his little sister during a home invasion in Port Charlotte, Florida.
15-year-old Khyler Edman was found dead in his home after a burglar broke into the house and murdered the boy who was “protecting his five-year-old sister.”
According to Bill Prummell, the Charlotte County Sheriff, the teen boy was protecting his home and his little sister, who survived the violent encounter unharmed, during the confrontation.
“They found that forced entry was made into a doorway and inside that residence they found a teenager and a young child,” the sheriff said in an interview with WESH-TV.
“It appears that the suspect had broken into this residence. A violent encounter ensued where we believe that the teenager was trying to protect the home, protect their younger sibling.”
The authorities rushed to the crime scene after the police received reports of an injured suspect escaping from the home and running through the neighborhood.
The perpetrator eventually made it inside the home of the person who alerted the police about an “unknown male” entering their property.
Soon enough, the officers caught the burglar who was identified as Ryan Clayton Cole and took him to the hospital where he’s getting treated for multiple stab wounds.
They also stumbled upon the residence of Khyler Edman where they found the teen lying lifeless on the floor.
“We request that the community and media continue to give the family privacy as they grieve. Detectives are continuing to work closely with the State Attorney’s Office on this investigation,” the sheriff’s office stated after the incident.
As for the grieving family, they pleaded with the people to help them raise funds to cover the brave boy’s funeral expenses.
“Khyler lost his life being a hero protecting his five year old sister when a man broke in our home in Port Charlotte,” they wrote on GoFundMe.
“Please help my family at this time give Khyler a proper burial he deserves, he was only 15 years old and lost his life due to a senseless act of a stranger. My son had a long life ahead of him, that was taken too soon.”
