A mental health nurse who helped a 73-year-old man with coronavirus symptoms received a new car.
24-year-old Lucy Duncan was driving her car home from a 12-hour shift when her vehicle was hit by the pensioner’s car.
The elderly man told her that he was trying to buy food as he was isolated for 10 days with symptoms of COVID-19.
Lucy contacted an ambulance and went to the hospital with the elderly man, who said he had not eaten for days. She decided to stay with him until she was informed that there was nothing more she could do.
She then found out later that the pensioner had passed away.
Celebrities and businesses have showered the Wigan Infirmary health worker with praise and offers. When Lucy appeared on BBC Breakfast, she was presented with a new car!
The pensioner reportedly told Lucy that he had no family except for his estranged son.
“The man was so grateful that I stayed with him and kept squeezing my hand and pulling it close to him,” Lucy told BBC News.
“He was in poor shape. He was also struggling to speak and breathe. He grabbed my arms and I leaned in to him and he said “I’m sorry but I think I have coronavirus”. He was really confused and drifting in and out of consciousness.”
She added: “When he was alert he seemed more concerned for the car damage and reassured me that he had comprehensive insurance.
“I told him I was more worried about him than the cars and that he needed an ambulance. I went to my car and luckily had a mask with me but no further personal protection equipment.
“He had gone out in his car to get some food and essentials, as he knew he would die without them. He said he didn’t trust other people as there were a lot of horrible people in the world.”
Family, neighbors and friends have also been dropping off treats and groceries at her front door as she self-isolates after her encounter with the elderly man.
“It’s been so overwhelming, I’ve had so many lovely messages and comments,” she said to the program.
Lucy also received a message from boxer Anthony Joshua. “You definitely showed compassion, you definitely showed bravery, so I want to congratulate you on that,” he said on the program.
“Stay safe, and what you guys in the NHS are doing is unbelievable. Keep it going – you guys are the unsung heroes.”
