The hero cop who led the Capitol rioters away from Senate chambers has admitted he now fears that he may have become the target of far-right extremists.
Despite knowing that he put himself at risk with his actions at the Capitol on Wednesday, 40-year-old Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman insists he would have done the same thing all over again if he had the chance.
During the Wednesday riot, Goodman put his life at risk as he confronted a group of rioters and lured them away from the Senate in order to give the people inside enough time to escape.
“He was diverting people from getting on the Senate floor and getting hostages. It was the smartest thing that he could have ever done,” one of his colleagues told the Washington Post.
“I don’t know that many people who can think on their feet like that… His quick thinking enabled those Senators to get to safety.”
While Goodman admitted he doesn’t see himself as a hero, he reportedly expressed fears that his actions made him a target among the far-right groups.
“He said he’d do the same thing again. He’s not looking for any accolades. But the attention is a little scary for him,” one of his colleagues said.
Another friend praised the cop’s quick thinking as he suggested his discipline comes from his time in the military.
“I’ve always said, if bullets start ripping through, I’m finding Goodman. He’s been in hostile fire fights, so he knows how to keep his head,” Terry told the Post.
