Amidst all the pandemic chaos that we are facing, we thought we could deal with some crazy news.
However, when the craziness spreads to the actual pandemic, this is when it gets all the more nerve wracking and possibly unnerving to say the least.
The Governor of Nairobi City, Kenya, Mike Sonko recently announced on a press conference that he will most definitely provide the home remedy for preventing the infections: Hennessy. Here is his actual statement from the press conference:
“We will have some small bottles of Hennessy in the food packs that we will be giving to our people… I think from the research conducted by the World Health Organization and various organizations, it has been believed that alcohol plays a major role in killing the coronavirus,”
Here is the official WHO reference for those who may think this home-made science somehow makes sense, taken from the official website available here:
“Alcohol is known to be harmful to health in general, and is well understood to increase the risk of injury and violence, including intimate partner violence, and can cause alcohol poisoning. At times of lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, alcohol consumption can exacerbate health vulnerability, risk-taking behaviours, mental health issues and violence.
WHO/Europe reminds people that drinking alcohol does not protect them from COVID-19, and encourages governments to enforce measures which limit alcohol consumption.”
“Alcohol consumption is associated with a range of communicable and noncommunicable diseases and mental health disorders, which can make a person more vulnerable to COVID-19. In particular, alcohol compromises the body’s immune system and increases the risk of adverse health outcomes. Therefore, people should minimize their alcohol consumption at any time, and particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
So not only is the Governor of Nairobi going against science, he is also mutilating scientific statements and going contrary against a readily accessible statement. Although there has been numerous requests from the media demanding explanation, he has yet to make defense of his position and distribution of the distilled alcohol.
Meanwhile, Hennessy branch of Kenya has issued their response through a telephone interview that they claim no such healing nature to their drinks, nor do they officially support the Governor’s decision in any ways relative to the pandemic survival package.
