A heartbroken grandmother said “It’s kill or be killed” now in New York City after her 12-year-old grandson was shot in the chest.
The shooting incident occurred in Bedford-Stuyvesant near Madison Street ad Malcolm X Boulevard on Saturday night.
The young boy, who is expected to survive, had been involved in a group fight and was targeted in a gang-related shooting.
His grandmother, Evette Lilly, told the New York Post: “The neighborhood is the neighborhood. It happens all the time.
“He’s just a normal kid who likes basketball. Now in this city it’s kill or be killed.”
The 12-year-old boy is said to be recovering at Maimonides Medical Center where he’s ‘talking a little.’
According to reports, the young boy heard gunfire but he did not immediately realize that he had been shot until he felt pain in his chest.
New York Police Department was investigating and has not made any arrests.
According to the Post, police discovered at least five shell casings at the scene and were searching for any videos captured on surveillance cameras.
This comes after many random acts of violence in the city in the past few weeks, including a 75-year-old man who was punched on Easter Sunday, and a man who was shot near Times Square earlier this week.
NYPD reported 99 shooting incidents in March 2021, compared to 56 last year.
