Her journey to New York happened in the year 1970 with six other elephant calves all the way from Thailand.

After she reached New York she was quite happy here along with the company of Grumpy. Both these elephants spent 25 years together at the Bronx Zoo.

But, the happiness came to an end all at once to Happy when her friend Grumpy was put to sleep 13 years ago. She had to spend all her life alone in the zoo after Grumpy left her.

However, there are a lot of campaigns conducted to release Happy from the zoo and let her free in the animal sanctuary to make her feel good.

Hence, sending Happy to a sanctuary is always a better choice. Isolating her can ruin her state of mind and can make her sad.

Generally, when the female elephants are in the wild they are usually raised by their family members like siblings, aunts and cousins and they continue to love with them throughout their life.

Hence, it is always great to release them amongst the other elephants for their well-being. Happy also has a great sense of self-awareness because after the gorillas and the dolphins she was the only creature to pass the mirror self-recognition test.
