Formula One superstar Lewis Hamilton criticized F1 and some of his fellow drivers, saying that they are not doing enough in the fight against racism contrary to what they have publicly stated.
The disappointed statement followed Hamilton winning the Hungary Grand Prix on Sunday. Hamilton wore a ‘Black Lives Matter’ t-shirt and kneeled down before the race began. Some drivers purposely showed up late, or remained standing.
This very visual lack of unity in message and participation has already been pointed out by many observers in the three previous races. Hamilton agreed, saying that it seems like the enthusiasm has run dry. He was especially critical towards the organization, saying that the movement lacked leadership.
Saying that the image of some kneeling down while others remained standing was embarrassing, Hamilton also criticized his fellow drivers. He said everyone needs to do so much more, adding that some drivers seem to think they can stop because they knelt down once.
In an Instagram post that he wrote immediately after the race, Hamilton said the pre-race event seemed very disorganized. He suspected that the lack of interest and involvement are the core reasons for the dissonance, warning that it may send a wrong message to viewers.
The champion said he will get in touch with Jean Todt, the President of the FIA. The FIA is the overarching organization that is in charge of all motorsports. Hamilton said he believes Todt and other executives are not putting in enough effort on this issue.
Contrary to Hamilton’s beliefs, the FIA and Formula One have at least publicly endorsed the movement. For instance, the FIA has pledged to donate a million Euros to aid the fight against global racism.
Formula One has also responded to its star’s comments, saying that it remains invested in the fight against racism and will continue to promote for diversity as its top priority.
Saying that they have established a new TF to reinforce plans that aim to promote diversity, Formula One also emphasized that they have donated $1 million to organizations that help with the employment of racial minorities.
