There was a time when a student’s studies took precedence over any athletic ability or interest in a particular sport.
But thanks to the steady rise in popularity of the NFL, NBA, and MLB, the concept of athletic scholarships slowly came into vogue. After all, it’s better to look for talent while they’re as young as possible so that they have more playable years ahead of them.

Now, students can get an education and earn big after graduation not just through intellectual prowess but through athletic ability as well. While many may look askance at the blatant commercialization of sports, it’s perhaps fitting that both body and mind are acknowledged when it comes to the realm of education. After all, both are inseparable from each other.
While most athletes get to really cash in on their talent after joining a professional sports team, one Oklahoma student managed to get a little extra benefit when he won free tuition for a year when he drained an amazing half-court shot.
It happened during halftime at a recent NCAA season opener game between Oklahoma State and ISU. It was all part of a promotion with free tuition for a year as the prize.
Cale Montis, a freshman student at Oklahoma University quickly took up the challenge. To successfully complete the challenge, he had to make a free throw, a layup, and then a three-point shot in 30 seconds. But all of these were just prerequisites to be given an opportunity to make the half-court shot that would seal the deal.
According to the OU Daily, Cale easily sank the free throw and the layup but had a bit of a fumble with the 3-pointer, missing two of them before finally draining the third one just as the 30-second buzzer sounded.
Despite that cliffhanger, the freshman calmly walked to the center of the court and made that beautiful shot with the ball touching nothing but net as the crowd erupts in cheers but perhaps none probably cheering as enthusiastically as his parents.
The way he made those shots makes it obvious that he’s no neophyte and he’s probably thankful that he put in those long hours of practice because in this case, it literally paid off!
