A hair salon owner has been slammed with a hefty fine and jailed for seven days after keeping her business open despite stay-at-home orders.

The incident occurred in Dallas, Texas, where Shelley Luther, the Salon a la Mode owner, kept her salon open and continued to work even though hair salons were prohibited to operate at the time.

Addressing Ms. Luther, the judge accused her of being selfish and issued a 7-day jail sentence on top of a $7,000 fine after the salon owner refused to apologize for her actions.

“I have to disagree with you, sir, when you say that I am selfish because feeding my kids is not selfish. I have hair stylists that are going hungry because they’d rather feed their kids,” Luther responded to the judge.

According to the reports, Luther was told to close her salon in a cease and desist letter on April 24. On April 28, the court also issued a temporary restraining order.

The hair salon owner, however, continued to operate and defended her decision in a Facebook video in which she said: “I’m still here, I’m standing for your rights and Salon A La Mode is open for business.”

As Luther insisted, she has the right to work because she and her hairstylists need money to take care of their families. The owner also argued that their work environment is safe and clean.

“I can’t afford to not stay open, and my stylists can’t afford to stop working anymore. We’re about to lose everything and haven’t gotten any help, so I had to make a decision,” she said in an interview with ABC13.
