Breakups are awful, they always have been, for everyone. What’s harder than a breakup itself is getting rid of every single thing related to the person you have broken up with.

Starting from WhatsApp and Messenger chat logs to Facebook posts and ‘selfies with the love of your life,’ you have to undergo a really painful experience.

You can throw away all of the gifts you got from the person – but throwing a ring into the ocean needs some exceptionally high level of anger.

It’s difficult to imagine the amount of pain and anger which made Brendan Beasley throw the ring off the same cliff where he had planned to propose his girlfriend.

Clearly, he wanted to end any connection related to the lady he once loved.

Brendan, an electrician from Sydney, Australia, was about to propose his girlfriend in a really special way.

He planned a trip to Santorini, Greece, which cost him upwards of AU$10,000 (6,780 USD), including a ring worth AU$5000 (3,390 USD).

The luxury holiday was going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but unfortunately, Brendan’s girlfriend broke up with him just before they had to depart for the engagement tour.

Speaking to news.com.au, Brendan said: “After three years together, and for no reason at all… she ended up leaving me.

“I was gutted because I had actually bought her a ring and booked us a surprise trip to Santorini [to propose] because she always wanted to get engaged there.”

Brendan, who described the breakup as ‘pretty brutal,’ decided to go alone on the journey, taking the ring with him on the tour.

Shedding light on the post-breakup events, the 25-year-old said: “She knew nothing about my plan, but I didn’t want to tell her I got her a trip and ring because she probably would’ve come back to me, and I didn’t want her to come back for that.

“So two days before the trip started, I told her about the trip – but not the ring.”

During the holiday, Brendan made friends with the tour guide who helped him a lot through the rough patch he was going through.

“When the tour leader asked why I was traveling alone, I told her what had happened, we bonded over that… and I told her about the ring,” he said about his new friend.

One evening, while he was watching the sunset from the island, he decided to take the ‘expensive’ step of throwing the costly ring into the ocean, never to be found again.

“I wanted to get rid of the ring, so I asked the group leader if she’d stand on the edge [of the cliff] and get rid of it with me,” he said.

“At that point, I threw it off the cliff. I got her to video it, and it’s probably the best video I have.”

Brendan seems to have zero regrets on his expensive decision.

“It cost me a lot of money, but the moment I threw the ring [into the ocean], a whole lot of weight lifted off my shoulders,” he said.

“A lot of stuff changed inside me as well in that moment, and I know it sounds cliché, but I really found myself in Europe after that. Yes, I wasted a lot of money, but I would do it all over again.”

Fortunately, he soon entered into a relationship with a Canadian girl. The couple is now living a good life in Canada, where Brendan teaches snowboarding.
