The College Republicans United (CRU) of Arizona State University is being slammed for launching a fundraiser to help Kyle Rittenhouse, the 17-year-old who shot two protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
CRU said that half of the money will be used to pay for the legal defense of Rittenhouse.
The group wrote on Twitter: “Half of the funds collected this semester for Republicans United will be donated to 17 year old Kyle Rittenhouse legal defense fund.
“He does not deserve to have his entire life destroyed because of the actions of violent anarchists during a lawless riot.”
The teen has been accused of shooting 36-year-old Joseph Rosenbaum and 26-year-old Anthony Huber with his AR-15 in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
The victims were part of protests sparked by the shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake, who was left paralyzed after police shot him in the back seven times while he was walking toward his vehicle.
Rittenhouse was charged with intentional homicide, two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, and one count of attempted first-degree intentional homicide.
He told officers that he was protecting local businesses and acted in self-defense.
CRU also shared the same view, saying: “Kenosha has devolved into anarchy because the authorities in charge of the city abandoned it.
“They stood back and watched Kenosha burn. Kyle Rittenhouse is not a vigilante but a citizen who attempted to help in a city in chaos.”
ASU College Republicans are calling for the university to launch an investigation into the fundraiser.
According to a statement: “We do not associate with nor condone their recent actions involving contributing to the legal defense fund of a man who shot and killed several Americans in Wisconsin.”
The university said they were aware of the fundraiser, adding ‘while there is no policy prohibiting student groups from raising funds for a cause such as this, ASU does not endorse or support this effort.’
