A group of armed people besieged a police station and launched fireworks at the building.
The attack occurred on Saturday night in Paris, France, where a group of around forty armed residents took to the streets of Champigny-sur-Marne to besiege the local police station.
According to the reports, the members of the riot were armed with metal bars and fireworks which they fired at the station.
After showering the building in a barrage of explosives, the group allegedly attempted to break into the station. Their attack, however, was repelled.
“Violent attack last night on the police station of Champigny with mortar shots and various projectiles. No police officer was injured,” Paris authorities confirmed in a statement on Twitter.
While the assailants failed to force their way into the police station, they managed to smash a series of windows and damage cars parked outside the building during their attack.
According to the commune’s mayor, Laurent Jeanne, the attack on the station might have been sparked by an earlier traffic accident that the locals blamed on the authorities.
“It was an organized attack of about 40 people who wanted to do battle. For a few days it has been tense with people who have a certain willingness to do battle with the police,” the mayor told BFM TV.
Another theory suggests that the attack was orchestrated due to a strong police presence in the area well-known for drug trafficking.
As Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin added in a statement on Twitter, “little gang leaders don’t impress anyone and they will not deter our work fighting drug trafficking.”
