The 16-year-old environmental protection advocate is currently in the run to become the next Nobel Peace Prize winner.

She is also one of the three winners of the 2019 Right Livelihood Award who deserved the recognition “for inspiring and amplifying political demands for urgent climate action reflecting scientific facts” according to the foundation.

After receiving the award which came along with over $100,000, Greta, who started a global movement after launching protests outside her school last year, released the following statement:

“I’m deeply grateful for being one of the recipients of this great honor. But of course, whenever I receive an award, it is not me who is the winner. I am part of a global movement of school children, youth and adults of all ages who have decided to act in defense of our living planet. I share this award with them.”

During her teary-eyed speech, Greta said:

“People are dying and dying ecosystems are collapsing. We are at the beginning of mass extinction, and all you can talk about is the money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!?”

The activist’s direct confrontation gained her millions of followers from around the world. Many, however, weren’t thrilled by her approach and called her names such as “drama queen” and “exploited teen.”

As what the teen is famous for, she didn’t let the haters’ remarks impact her productivity. Instead, she shared a message for everyone who has a problem with her and her ways.

“As you may have noticed, the haters are as active as ever – going after me, my looks, my clothes, my behavior, and my differences. They come up with every thinkable lie and conspiracy theory,” she shared on Twitter.

“It seems they will cross every possible line to avert the focus since they are so desperate not to talk about the climate and ecological crisis. Being different is not an illness and the current, best available science is not opinions – it’s facts.

“I honestly don’t understand why adults would choose to spend their time mocking and threatening teenagers and children for promoting science, when they could do something good instead. I guess they must simply feel so threatened by us.

“But don’t waste your time giving them any more attention. The world is waking up. Change is coming whether they like it or not. See you in the streets this Friday!”
