We all have dreamed of going on a vacation for free and Greece made it possible for all of us.
Yes, you heard it right.
Greece wants to pay people £450(around $560) per month to live there. You will be surprised to know that they are also giving the new locals a plot of land to build their home or business.
The island of Antikythera is in search of new locals as the remote isle is home to just 24 people and during the summer, it increases to 40 people.
The island is 45 minutes by plane from Athens and located between Crete and Kythira.
Greek Orthodox Church has sponsored this scheme and they are looking for young families. The reason behind it is the population has dropped from over 300 people at the beginning of the 20th century.
Mayor of the island Andreas Harhalakis told the Greek website Iefimerida: “We are looking for many families to ‘revive’ our island.”
There are jobs for fishermen, bakers and builders and internet connection and electricity on the island and it is surrounded by wonderful sandy beaches.
Island president Andreas Charchalakis added: ”These are professions which can guarantee a decent income for those who will come to our island.”
As we know the priority is offered to Greek families but the opportunity is also open to other nationalities.
Penelope Charchalakis, Mr. Charchalakis’ mom, said: “I remember in the old days there were 70 children at school, 800 people lived here and we had two priests. ‘Today there are almost no children at all.”
According to the Greek Recorder, “Since the project to attract young families to the island was made public, more than fifteen different families have called the local council to learn further details of the plan.”
”The council president says that local people are willing to host whoever would like to come and visit the island to gain hands-on experience of its way of life. This is considered important in order for families to be able to make a sound decision about moving there permanently.”
