A 90-year-old grandmother was forced to sleep on the streets wearing only her bathrobe.

The elderly woman was evicted from her apartment after she failed to pay her rent and spent cold nights on the street wearing nothing but her bathrobe.

According to Greek City Times, the grandmother was living with her grandson in Athens. However, he lost his job because of the pandemic and they could not afford to pay rent for four months.

They reportedly owed their landlord more than $2,000.

Even though the grandson managed to get another job, the payment was not enough to cover food costs and other expenses.

A bailiff arrived at their apartment last week and forced them out without letting them take any of their belongings. The 90-year-old woman was only wearing a bathrobe and she had to spend autumn nights on the streets.

Neighbors contacted the ‘Doctors of the World’ to help the elderly woman, and the organization offered a temporary place for the grandmother and her grandson.

But because their dog was not allowed inside the dormitory, the woman refused to stay in the dorm as she did not want to be separated from her beloved pet.

Eugenia Thanou, the director of Doctors of the World, said to Ethnos: “When we told them that the dog could not be accommodated in the dormitory, they told us that they would not go anywhere without the animal.

“They preferred to spend two days on the street with the dog until we found a hostel for the animal. When we told them that the dog would be hosted in a hostel, then they agreed to come to the Doctors of the World dormitory.”

Thanou added: “Grandmother and grandson are very close to each other. The grandmother is sad for the grandson and the grandson is anxious for the grandmother.”

The organization is looking for a permanent place for the elderly woman and her grandson.
