A 58-year-old grandmother from Minnesota has been sentenced to life in jail without parole after she pleaded guilty to killing her husband.
According to KAAL-TV, Lois Riess from Blooming Prairie pleaded guilty to fatally shooting her husband, 54-year-old David Riess, at their home in southern Minnesota.
Also called ‘Losing Streak Lois’ because of her addiction to gambling, Lois Riess also pleaded guilty to murdering Pamela Hutchinson in Florida.
It is alleged Riess killed Hutchinson as they looked similar and she wanted to steal her identity.
The 58-year-old grandmother was sentenced to life in jail after she pleaded guilty to killing Hutchinson.
Riess apologized to her husband’s family and friends, saying life without him is her true sentence.
“What I did was an unpardonable crime. Solitude is forever. I feel I deserve this. I will have no reprieve,” she said, the Grand Forks Herald reported.
Her lawyer said that David and Lois got into an argument because he wanted to leave their grandson’s basketball tournament.
Their dispute escalated that David decided to pull out his handgun and gave it to his wife, saying: “Why don’t you kill yourself? Maybe you will get it right this time.”
Lois grabbed the weapon and shot her husband multiple times in the chest and ran away, causing a nationwide manhunt.
Her daughter, Breanna Riess, said in a statement: “I cycle between anger, regret and sadness. Losing my dad at the hands of my mom is something I will never be able to process… I miss my dad more than words can describe, but I have to allow for forgiveness in my heart, because that’s what he would have wanted.”
The couple’s eldest son, Billy Riess, told his mother: “I don’t care how many times you apologize. You stole something from us.”
Darlene Riess, David’s mother, stated: “When you killed David, you took my heart.”
Prosecutors agreed that the 58-year-old grandmother would serve a life sentence without parole.
