70-Year-Old Grandmother Cleaned 52 Beaches In Less Than A Year


With Earth being our only home, it seems only natural that we take good care of it.

Still, the human race managed to pollute various natural sources with plastic representing one of the biggest environmental threats of the modern world.

To show us that it is never too late to take action and take better care of our planet, one 70-year-old grandmother decided to embark on a journey that inspired the world.

Pat Smith of Cornwall, UK, took matters in her own hands after watching a documentary about plastic pollution and realizing that the problem is present everywhere.

And so, the 70-year-old started the year 2018 with a special challenge – she set out to clean one beach per week until the end of the year.

Soon enough, the people surrounding Pat took notice of her passion and decided to join her on her quest. Alongside several volunteers including her own grandchildren, Pat managed to clean up 52 Cornwall beaches in 2018.

After reaching her goal, the hardworking senior didn’t want to stop. She decided to continue her mission and make the world a better place together with the help of her supporters.

And so, Ms. Smith launched The Final Straw, an initiative that aims to clean the environment and raise awareness about the presence and the effects of plastic pollution. One of her goals is also to make her hometown entirely plastic straw-free.

“A fantastic and inspiring campaign. I am using this as an example to reduce plastic consumption and create change in my local area here in Auckland NZ,” one inspired individual shared on The Final Straw Facebook page.

“Fantastic Campaign, we need to keep sharing this and spreading the word, teaching everyone especially our children the importance of environmental issues and how important this is to our future planet,” another one said.
