As the 80-year-old admitted, she started volunteering after moving to a home for the elderly and beginning to feel as if she had lost her purpose of living.

The new hobby not only helps keep her “busy” but also provides hundreds of children with Christmas gifts they would otherwise not get.

After her generous act gained recognition, Fran had no problems partnering up with local charity groups and stores who provide her with supplies for the gifts. Nevertheless, she is the one who pays for the wrapping paper and other materials needed to make the gifts look presentable from her own pocket.

“My son used to live opposite me, so him and my grandchildren used to come over every day, but once I moved they couldn’t visit me as often,” the grandma explained.

“I initially felt lonely, but then I saw an advertisement about a shoe box appeal in a church magazine and I thought it was a great idea. I was given a room upstairs to work on the shoe boxes, and it has really helped me keep busy.”

As Fran revealed, the majority of gifts contain basic essentials, clothes, toiletries, and games. Gifts created for children also include toys, coloring pencils, and books.
