This couple may be the oldest ever to conceive naturally in China, according to reports.
A 67-year-old grandmother gave birth to her third child with her 68-year-old husband. She delivered her baby at Zaozhuang Maternity and Child Health Hospital, according to state-run channel CCTV.
The woman, who has been identified as Tian, was a doctor at the same facility.
A spokesperson for the hospital said to the news station that Tian naturally conceived the baby. She also used traditional Chinese fertility treatments throughout the process.
The chief physician, Liu Chengwen, said to CCTV: “When we examined the woman’s reproductive system during her labor, we found that she, unlike most other women in their 60s who have withered ovaries, has ovaries similar to that of women in their 40s.
“That’s probably one of the reasons she was able to conceive naturally.”
However, her pregnancy had some complications. She experienced abnormal kidney and liver function and heart failure as her due date approached.
In addition, she also developed a pregnancy complication called preeclampsia, which is marked by high blood pressure in a person who does not usually experience it. This can result in sudden swelling in the hands and face, and can cause fatal problems.
“We designed special therapeutic care and contingency plans, pulled together a team consisting of doctors from the internal medicine, surgical, obstetrics, nutritional and other departments to provide round-the-clock monitoring of the pregnant woman,” Liu said to CCTV.
Tian, who may be the oldest woman to give birth in China, delivered her baby via a cesarean section.
She told the outlet that their two children were opposed to them having another child at their age. “My daughter even said that if I gave birth to this little baby, she would sever all ties to us,” she told CCTV.
