If you allow your cat to go outside and think it stays near your house, and are safe, you may be wrong!
Recent research used GPS trackers showed the daily movement of pet cats and its results are surprising for their owners.

“When you speak to a lot of cat owners they say: “Oh my cat just sleeps on the end of my bed, it doesn’t go anywhere,” senior land service officer Peter Evans said. Turns out some of the cats have “gone three kilometers from home.”
“I thought Semi particularly would be just local, the bottom of the garden or next door’s yard,” one of the pet owners said.point 219 |
He was shocked when he learned that Semi was going into bushland and “over the hill and far away.point 81 | ” The owner is guessing that the cat is “looking for food which is probably the primary thing because he’s usually around eight and a half kilos which [the vet says] is far, far too heavy.point 240 |

“Cats are given a pretty bad rap. In terms of the damage they do to biodiversity, to native fauna and flora,” Peter Evans, told Mashable Australia.
“Some people said when their cat was fitted with the tracker, it would lay flat on the ground, and wouldn’t move,” Evans said. “Ultimately the welfare of the cat was paramount to what we were doing.”
Evans also said owners were “gobsmacked” to see how far their cats roamed. “I knew they wouldn’t just stay in the backyard, but I was surprised with how far a few of the cats did go.“
Evans hopes the cat tracking project will extend nationally.
“We’re hoping that people think about what dangers a cat can pose to itself, in terms of how often they’re crossing the road and encountering other cats,” he said.
