A governor’s office has been slammed after suggesting that diners should keep their face masks on in between bites while urging people to “minimize the number of times” they take their masks off.
The unclear advice which sparked a series of mocking replies was shared by the Office of the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom.
“Going out to eat with members of your household this weekend? Don’t forget to keep your mask on in between bites. Do your part to keep those around you healthy,” the suggestion read.
Along with the text, the Office shared a photo with a diner tip that read: “Minimize the number of times you take your mask off.”
Following the self-contradicting post, Californians began ridiculing the confusing government advice.
“Not only do I live in a state with the highest taxes in the country, it’s confirmed, I live in the dumbest state,” one person wrote.
“This has got to be the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard,” another one added.
Journalist Matthew Fuhrman suggested: “I’m very confused by this tweet. The image suggests you should only take your mask off once when you begin a meal but the text suggests you should put it back on between bites.”
Questioning the safety of the advice, one person said: “Increasing the number of times you touch your face, constantly removing mask each time you take a bite? Any calculations done on how many ‘bites’ each individual takes in a meal and therefore how many hand-to-face contacts that will mean? Presume that has been risk-assessed?”
“I thought this was a parody account… you can’t be serious. Do you realize how many more times the mask would be touched with unclean hands?” another one wrote.
