A governor has spoken out in congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s defense as he insisted she’s being targeted for having a different opinion.
Greene has been facing calls for resignation after it came to light that she believes in several far-right conspiracy theories. Among other controversial beliefs, Georgia’s representative supports QAnon and thinks the election was stolen. She previously also suggested that Jewish space lasers caused California fires and that Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting was planned by Democrats.
Despite the backlash that the congresswoman has been facing, Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, who is a Republican, appeared to defend Greene in an interview with ABC’s This Week.
As host Martha Raddatz asked the governor if he believes that Greene is “fit to serve” given her controversial beliefs, Hutchinson responded by suggesting she shouldn’t be punished for having a different opinion.
“I’m not going to answer that question as to whether she’s fit to serve because she believes in something that everybody else does not accept,” he said.
“I don’t think we ought to punish people from a disciplinary standpoint – a Party standpoint – because they believe something a little bit different.”
While the governor admitted he wouldn’t vote for her, he acknowledged the fact that the representative was chosen by the people.
“The people of her district elected her and that should mean a lot,” Hutchinson said. “She’s going to run for reelection and she’ll be accountable for what she said and her actions.”
The Sunday interview with the governor followed shortly after Greene doubled down on her election fraud allegations despite Trump being gone from the White House for nearly two weeks.
Addressing officials at her district’s town hall in Dallas, Georgia, the congresswoman defended the narrative that the election was stolen.
“See, this wasn’t a conspiracy of several people that got together and created a story. This is literally thousands of people in different states and different voting precincts different counties. And they all signed these affidavits,” she insisted.
The congresswoman also blasted the media and the Democrats as she accused them of hating America in a series of tweets on January 30.
“The blood thirsty media and the socialists hate America. Democrats are attacking me now just like they always attack President Trump,” she wrote after claiming she had a great call with Trump.
She added: “I can promise you this. I won’t back down. I’ll never apologize. And I’ll always keep fighting for the people. For me, it’s America First!!! Any elected politician that isn’t putting America First doesn’t deserve their position or the people’s trust.”
