Governor Signs ‘Heartbeat Bill’ Banning Abortions As Early As Six Weeks Into Pregnancy

Governor Phil Bryant from Mississippi signed a bill into law.

It bans abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected.

Heartbeat Bills are among the most restrictive measures regarding abortion that are being considered in the United States. These laws could make abortions illegal as soon as a fetal heartbeat can be detected.

Similar bills were passed by the Tennessee and Georgia Houses of Representatives, and may well become law this year.

As Tennessee and Georgia consider similar laws, Kentucky also passed one that bans abortion after a heartbeat is detected.

Its law was challenged by the American Civil Liberties Union when Matt Bevin, a Republican Governor, signed it on March 14. A federal judge even blocked it temporarily.

A federal judge also blocked another law in Kentucky that would ban abortion for women who want to end their pregnancies due to race, gender or fetus disability.

Last year, another federal judge struck down a Mississippi law that would ban abortions after 15 weeks into pregnancy.

The law that Gov. Bryant signed says a doctor who performs an abortion after a heartbeat is detected could face revocation of Mississippi medical license.

Abortions could only be allowed after a heartbeat is detected if a pregnancy endangers a mother’s life or one of her major bodily functions.

The House and Senate rejected efforts to allow exceptions for pregnancies caused by incest or rape.

Bryant said he is not worried about lawsuits. “They don’t have to sue us. It’s up to them.

“If they do not believe in the sanctity of life, these that are in organizations like Planned Parenthood, we will have to fight that fight. But it is worth it.”

Staff attorney for the Center for Reproductive Rights Hillary Schneller, also said in a statement: “Lawmakers didn’t get the message.

“They are determined to rob Mississippians of the right to abortion, and they are doing it at the expense of women’s health and taxpayer money. This ban – just like the 15-week ban the governor signed a year ago – is cruel and clearly unconstitutional.”
