Having food delivered has added a whole new level of convenience towards eating. Don’t feel like cooking or popping a microwave dinner at home? Meeting starting to run into lunchtime at the office? Just press a few buttons on the phone or make a few swipes on an app and voila! You can have anything from your favorite burger and fries to a gourmet meal.
Of course, this is not to say that there aren’t problems. If it’s raining hard or there’s heavy traffic in the area, you could be left writhing in hunger before your food finally arrives and woe to the hapless delivery person who happens to be in front of you then.
However, residents of Canberra will hopefully leave most of those problems in the past with the upcoming debut of Google’s drone delivery service.
The Civil Aviation Authority announced: “We have approved Wing Aviation Pty Ltd to operate ongoing delivery drone operations in North Canberra.”
And what’s even cooler is that the drone service won’t just be delivering food.point 182 | They can also deliver over-the-counter medicines, locally-made coffee, and even chocolate.point 262 |

The whole service is being managed by Wing which is itself an offshoot of Google’s parent company Alphabet. The company has been making trial runs of the service for the past 18 months, managing to clock in an impressive 3,000 deliveries.
According to the company, most deliveries can be completed in six to ten minutes.
A statement on their website says: “Our delivery drones can pick up a package from a business or home, fly to a designated destination, and gently lower the package to the ground in a precise location (like a backyard or near a doorstep).
“Our drones map the best route to a designated location using our unmanned traffic management platform (UTM), which manages the drones’ flight path from take-off to landing, making sure they plan routes around each other, buildings, trees, or anything else that might be in the way.”
While the service will only be available in the Canberra suburbs of Crace, Palmerston, and Franklin at first, expansion is expected to quickly follow.
Heavy rain or strong winds may still be an issue, though, as the drones might crash. In that case, there’s nothing like the good old-fashioned delivery guy.
