3-Year-Old Lincoln The Goat Elected As The New Mayor Of A Small Town

3-year-old Lincoln the goat became Fair Haven’s first honorary pet mayor after defeating her competitors and capturing the hearts of the locals.

The Nubian goat was elected in a Vermont town of Fair Haven that doesn’t have a human mayor. The tiny town is home to 2,500 people including Joseph Gunter who is known as the Town Manager.

According to Gunter, he heard about a similar town in Michigan having pet mayor elections and decided to introduce the fun practice to Fair Haven as well.

And so, the residents were allowed to enroll their beloved pets in the race for only $5. All the contributions have been dedicated to the development of their community playground.

As Gunter expressed, the race helped not only by raising funds and bringing in the fun but also by introducing “the elementary school kids to local government.”

“Kids got to vote. So when they went to the polling place with their parents, they were able to participate,” the town manager explained.

The balloting was held alongside the Town Meeting Day voting and with all residents being allowed to cast their vote.

Lincoln came in first with 13 votes, narrowly beating Sammie Viger the dog who received 11 votes. In total, 16 pets participated in the elections and 53 ballots were cast.

Some of the other pets who came close to the title of the pet mayor were Stella Heibler the dog, Sassy the cat, and Crystal the gerbil.

Following Lincoln’s swearing-in, the newly-elected mayor did something that put his approval rating at immediate risk. The Nubian goat defecated in the office before the official ceremony was over, causing a police officer to quickly clean up the mess to avoid raising eyebrows.

When she’s not busy with the mayor’s duties, Lincoln enjoys her time playing in the backyard of her home together with Lucy, a fellow Nubian goat.
