If you’ve ever bitten your tongue accidentally, then you know just how painful it can be. And that’s enough to make you wonder who in their right mind would want to have their tongue split.
That’s why it’s surprising to find out that tongue splitting is one of the most popular forms of body modification. The most common method is having the tongue cut at the center from the tip and often until the underside base. During the two weeks that it generally takes the tongue to heal, there may be difficulty eating, drinking, or even speaking. But once the tongue has healed, one can gain control over each side with a little bit of practice.
And speaking of control, one particular girl has demonstrated the remarkable control that she has gained over her split tongue. As can be seen in the 53-second clip, she is able to perform some bizarre mouth acrobatics, pulling some literal tongue twisters and other moves that can either mesmerize or make one cringe.
According to the girl: “I always wanted a split tongue. I had no idea I’d gain control. Acquired new talent.”
That talent will definitely get people’s attention, that’s for sure.
Most people would scratch their heads wondering why anyone would want to go through what looks like a tortuous procedure for the dubious honor of gaining a forked tongue. But according to those who have undergone the procedure, they say it magnifies the sensation of kissing both for the receiver and the giver. In one way, it tests their level of fine-motor control and the body’s limits but at the same time, it makes them feel more connected.
Apart from that, like other body modifications, a split tongue also serves as a badge of recognition and acceptance so that one can identify with and connect with a certain social grouping. Despite its rather drastic appearance, unlike other body modifications, a split tongue is actually quite easy to hide with some practice.
Obviously, when one’s mouth is shut then no one would be the wiser. But when speaking, if one keeps that two halves pressed together, the split is not obvious. Casual observation will only reveal a deep crevice in the middle of the tongue that while unusual, may not necessarily elicit further questions.
As for the girl in the video, she likely has an inborn talent when it comes to muscle control like wiggling one’s ears. She can certainly turn herself into the central focus of a party if she so desired!
