A 5-year-old girl tragically died after she was shot in the face by her playmate.
Jada Willingham from Georgia was playing with her best friend, also 5, when they saw an unattended handgun in the bedroom.
The young girl was rushed to the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta after she was shot by the other five-year-old girl at their Lithonia home.
Police officers arrived at the scene and found Jada on the bedroom floor, according to an incident report.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that the children were being watched by a 68-year-old mother, who was seen kneeling next to the injured Jada and trying to stop the blood.
She said that the children had been playing in the bedroom when she suddenly heard a gunshot. She was in the kitchen at the time of the incident.
An arrest warrant from the police states that the weapon was found “without a holster, full magazine, with a round chambered.”
The gun belonged to the military mother of one of the girls.
An officer asked the 5-year-old girl to show them where they found the gun.
“She grabbed my hand and led me down the hall into her parents’ room and advised she located it on the floor on top of a small ammo box beside the bed,” the officer said. The child told them that she did not know that there were bullets inside the weapon.
The father of one of the children, 36-year-old Chad Brooks Sr., was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children.
A GoFundMe page created by the girl’s mother, Keisha Walker, has raised $10,000.
The page reads: “Due to this sad accident a mother is without her beautiful 5-year-old daughter this holiday season. This 5 year old little girl will never get to see another birthday, holidays school graduation again and it isn’t fair.”
