14-year-old Redena Al-Hadi and her sister 13-year-old Wida were on their way home from Silverdale School when a 40-year-old woman suddenly attacked them.
The young schoolgirl was punched by the woman and chocked with her own hijab while the attacker shouted racial slurs.
The woman also pushed Miss Al-Hadi onto the bus floor before giving her brutal blows.
Police officers arrested the 40-year-old woman and a man, 44, on suspicion of racially aggravated assault and also public order offenses.
Miss Al-Hadi said to the Mirror after the attack: “It makes me feel sick and scared.”
She added: “I don’t want to go to school. How can an adult attack a child for wearing a hijab? I was a young girl trying to go home. It makes me feel so targetted. That is who I am.
“When she was strangling me I thought I was going to die. She shouldn’t be on the streets. She could do this to another Muslim. I am now too scared to leave my house.”
The schoolgirl said the attack occurred when she, her younger sister, and another friend were confronted by a 44-year-old man who allegedly called their friend the n-word.
A bystander stood up for them but was allegedly punched. Miss Al-Hadi said that they tried to get off the bus but the woman started attacking her.
One witness shouted: “She’s a f****** child!”
The woman and the woman eventually walked away but Miss Al-Hadi’s friends can still be heard screaming.
A spokesperson for the South Yorkshire Police said: “Our inquiry into reports of racial abuse in the Ecclesall Road area of Sheffield on Wednesday 4 December is continuing.
“The investigation is also currently undergoing a full review. This will include revisiting and speaking to witnesses.”
He added: “A 40-year-old woman, arrested at the scene, has been given a caution for assault, while a 44-year-old man remains on police bail as enquiries continue.
“Anyone with information, or who holds footage of the incident, is asked to call 101 or email [email protected] quoting incident number 601 of 4 December 2019.”
