A young girl accidentally ran over and killed two men after stealing her mother’s car in California, police officers said.
Reports revealed that the 13-year-old girl had been driving the SUV with her friend in the passenger seat.
The horrific incident occurred at around 11:19 pm in Escondido, San Diego on Friday.
A police statement said that the vehicle was stopped by an Escondido officer near Gamble Street and Mission Ave for a traffic violation.
But what the cop did not realize that that time was that the SUV was being driven by a 13-year-old who took her mother’s vehicle without permission.
When the cop approached the vehicle to talk to the driver, the teens immediately drove away and tried to turn to north Ash Street.
However, the teen lost control of the car and they crashed into the east side of the road, hitting two homeless men.
One man died in the hospital while the other was pronounced dead at the scene.
The girls have been arrested but were eventually released to their parents.
The Medical Examiner’s office and investigators are still trying to identify the victims but they were both adults.
One person commented: “Many of these incidents would be avoided if more Americans bought cars with manual transmissions.”
Another wrote: “Charge her as an adult. Driving under age with no license and running from police before killing 2 persons when she wrecked her parent’s vehicle. Every life is as important as her life.”
A third added: “Doesn’t happen in Europe as most cars are manual transmission. Most 13 year old wouldn’t even to be able to start the car.”
