In an interview with The Daily News in Galveston, Harwood said that her daughter had no diagnosed immune disorders or other health problems.

Their family members were under quarantine after she tested positive for coronavirus. But despite their efforts, her fiancé and her 5-month-old son got infected, with the baby had to be rushed to a hospital.

By 2 am, Harwood noticed that 4-year-old Kali had a fever, so she gave her medicine and sent her to bed.

Only five hours later, Kali had passed away. “She died in her sleep,” Harwood said.

Harwood now hopes that sharing her daughter’s story would change people’s minds about the pandemic and the vaccine.

“We are all so broken and lost and just trying to figure out how we are gonna get (through) this life without her light,” Harwood wrote.

Galveston County Local Health Authority Philip Keiser called Kali’s death a tragedy that underlies the need for more vaccination.

“This is a terrible thing, but I think people need to know about it,” Keiser said.  “It’s very important, if your kids are sick, not to say, ‘Oh, they’re going to be OK.’ ‘If your kids are sick, go seek out medical care.”
