While the family chose to remain anonymous for privacy reasons, they told the media they believe they were targeted out of hate amid growing crimes against Asian-Americans in the country.

Afraid that she was going to get kidnapped or killed, the young girl left a heartbreaking message on the well of the bathroom using her pencil. “Help … Robbers!” the message wrote.

Following the home invasion, Good Samaritans raised more than $8,000 for the victims on GoFundMe where the family opened up about the details of the incident.

“Earlier in the day, my parents-in-law were at the cemetery to pay respect for our passed loved ones when my father-in-law’s car window was smashed and tires were slashed. We thought it was a hate crime and reported it to the Colma police,” their post explained.

“They didn’t notice the robbers stole their garage door remote and took down their home address. Just a few hours later we found out that their home was broken into while the 11-year-old girl was inside attending class via Zoom. The 11-year-old girl is okay, and our family is remaining strong.

“This gofundme is set up to support the recovery of the victims of this heinous crime. The funds will be given to the families of the 11-year-old victim and Mr. K (my parents-in-law) to pay for a new security system, to cover any expenses they will incur due to the robbery, and to recoup some of the loss. But most importantly, it will allow them to feel the love and support from their community.”

“More than anything we want everyone to use our family’s unfortunate incident as a learning experience,” the update read.

“Please don’t leave your garage door remote in your cars. Please do not leave cash or jewelry in the home. Please install a camera in your home if you haven’t done so already. Please do not take walks alone right now. Please look out for one another.”
