A 19 year old teenage girl from the UK hanged herself to death because she worried that a potential lockdown may be the end to her liberty and freedom.
The shocking and tragic cause of death was confirmed during an inquest over the death of Emily Owen from Norfolk, UK.
When Emily’s sister and mother found the teenager, the family had decided to self-isolate after Emily’s sister began coughing. Although she was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, Emily never regained her consciousness. She passed away on March 19th.
Timothy Owen, Emily’s father, said that his daughter was extremely excited about moving to Cornwall. However, Covid-19 had thwarted all of her plans – for someone who was eager to start a new life, the pressure and stress kept on piling on.
In the end, Timothy believes that the final push for his daughter was when they told her she can’t go out for a drive. The bereaved father said just like many other Britons during the time of lockdown, Emily just seemed to break down after being told no for the final time.
Norfolk’s senior coroner concurred with the family’s argument that Emily’s death was indeed a suicide. She expressed her condolences to the Owens, saying that the adventurous girl must have felt confined due to the pandemic.
Timothy added that Emily’s mental health really began to deteriorate after 2018. That was the year in which she was diagnosed with high-functioning autism. Annabel, Emily’s older sister, empathized with her sister by saying that Emily must have been terrified with the world.
In a Facebook post that was uploaded not long after her death, the family said that they were devastated to lose a beautiful, talented and humorous family member. At the same time, they said they were proud of what Emily left behind in this world.
They also thanked everyone for sharing their own experiences with Emily, which all seemed to be positive. The family also added how no one really knew about Emily’s inner struggles before 2018, and that everyone should look out for those around them who may have similar problems.
