Doctors often receive calls in the middle of the night, but one certain call changed Dr.
Christine Finck’s life.
Dr. Finck is the Division Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Connecticut Children’s Hospital. It has become normal for her to get calls during the night.
It was in February 2006 when she received a late night call that ended up changing her life. A preemie baby was born with gastroschisis – a birth defect of the abdominal wall. This means her intestines are outside of her body.
“Despite having all her intestines not where they were supposed to be, she was feisty! Her bright blue eyes seemed to be smiling at me,” Dr. Finck expressed.
The girl’s mother, who was still young at that time, said to Dr. Finck that she named her Isabelle.
Isabelle’s first year of life was packed with surgery after surgery. Dr. Finck spent every day with the little angel, ending every visit by holding her hands.
Their bond grew stronger and stronger that many nurses often teased Dr. Finck that she would end up bringing the adorable child home.
“I had grown very close to her. I was at her bedside a lot, and I think watching her frail but tough spirit made me just feel a special connection with her,” she expressed.
Before Isabelle’s first birthday, she was ready to go back to her mother’s care but still needed a lot of care. She had a feeding tube in her stomach and was still on IV.
After only two nights, the young mother took her child to Dr. Finck and admitted that she couldn’t support Isabelle.
Remembering what happened next, Dr. Finck said: “Right then and there I blurted out, ‘I can take her.’ I remember thinking, ‘Wow, who said that?!’ And her mom stated, ‘Oh that would be great. You know her the best.’”
Her husband also immediately agreed to adopt the little girl. Two months later, the couple was able to bring Isabelle home.
“She has just turned 10, and I cannot remember a life without her. She has taught me so much about being a mother and a doctor,” Dr. Finck said. “I often look up at the sky and thank God I was on call that night.”
