Lucia Berghella passed away after suffering a seizure medics said was caused by overuse of her iPad.

According to her family, she had been suffering ‘mini’ seizures’ for three years before she passed away.

Her grieving mother, Anne Forbes, took her daughter to eye specialists and doctors many times but they were told that Lucia’s shaking head and flickering eyes were caused by dry eyes.

In March this year, the 13-year-old suffered a major seizure and was rushed to Monash Clayton Hospital in Melbourne.

Doctors said the seizure had been caused by a lack of sleep and overuse of her iPad before discharging the teen without further tests.

The mother was very concerned that her daughter had been sent home after spending only two hours in the hospital.

One week later, Lucia was found unresponsive in her bedroom and it was already too late to save her.

Despite the mini-fits and seizure, a coroner could not confirm the cause of death as no tests were carried out when she was still alive.

Anne is now campaigning to have her daughter’s death reclassified and has sent an autopsy report to a specialist neurologist, who said that the 13-year-old died of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy.

She told Mail Online: “When people are diagnosed in Australia they aren’t told about the risks of SUDEP, which is really terrible because it’s bad enough my daughter died without even having a diagnosis.

“I’m really angry at the hospital because they just fobbed us off and let us down.

“It’s just not right what the hospital did, they let her down and robbed me of my future.”
