A teen girl was expelled from a private school after posing with a colorful rainbow cake while wearing a ‘pride’ sweater on her 15th birthday.
As Kayla Kenney from Kentucky explained, she was enjoying her birthday outing in the presence of her friends and family. Little did she know, however, that pictures from the cheerful day would get her expelled from Whitefield Academy, a private Christian school.
After the girl’s mum, Kimberly Alford, shared the photos on social media, the school’s officials were quick to accuse the teen of going against the beliefs of the school.
“She was happy, she looked beautiful. You know, of course as a mom, I took her picture of her blowing out her candles and I posted that on my Facebook page,” the mother said in an interview with WAVE3.
The Whitefield Academy, however, didn’t take pictures of Kayla in a rainbow sweater, even though it was actually missing pride colors, lightly.
Just days after her mum posted birthday photos on Facebook, Kayla received a letter informing her that she’d been dismissed from Whitefield Academy due to “continued breach” of their “code of conduct.”
As the family explained after the incident, Kayla never intended to make any references to the LGBTQ movement with her sweater or the cake.
According to Alford, she had no hidden agenda and she simply celebrated her birthday in her favorite colors.
“[She] loves to laugh and dance and that’s just her. There was nothing intended by that and even when I went back and got the receipt from the bakery, it didn’t say anything about representation, it just said assorted colors,” the mother added.
“I feel judged, she feels judged, just very devastating for us. You know we teach our kids what would Jesus do, What would he do here?”
While the family can’t understand where all the school’s hate against assorted colors comes from, or why it is there in the first place, the school argued that the photo only represented a small part of “lifestyle violations” the girl allegedly committed over the period of two years.
